Careers at AVA

Join our team. Help people live well at home.

Who we're looking for

You might be a great caregiver if…

You don't need a résumé full of care jobs. Many great caregivers start because they helped a parent, a grandparent or a neighbor.

  • You're patient and kind, and you treat people with respect
  • You show up on time and do what you said you would
  • You keep private things private
  • You like helping with real, everyday tasks
  • You're 18 or older
  • You're open to learning and to feedback from a supervisor

What the job is, and what it isn't

You'll help with

  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, moving safely around the home
  • Light housekeeping, laundry and meals
  • Medication reminders (reminders only)
  • Company and conversation
  • Errands on your own, like the grocery store or the pharmacy

You won't

  • Drive or transport clients, in your car or theirs
  • Do medical tasks (no injections, wound care or giving medicines)
  • Work in facilities: all care is in clients' own homes (houses and apartments), not assisted living or nursing homes

Why work at AVA

A job where you're supported

  • You're our employee.

Every AVA caregiver is a W-2 employee, including family members we hire. We handle payroll and payroll taxes, and you're covered by workers' compensation while you work. We don't use independent contractors.

  • We train you first.

You get an orientation, our online training and a skills check with a supervisor before you work on your own, plus training every year after that.

  • You're not on your own.

A supervisor checks on each client regularly, and our Aurora office is a phone call away on weekdays.

  • Part-time or full-time.

    Weekdays, evenings and weekends available.

Training

No experience? We train you.

Never worked as a caregiver? That's OK. New caregivers without experience complete AVA's initial training before they start. It's interactive and online: you do it on a website, at your own pace, from home. You'll know what to do before your first visit.

  1. Orientation. Our policies, client rights, privacy and what to do in an emergency.

  2. Initial online training. Interactive lessons on a website, at your own pace, from home: personal care and homemaking skills as Colorado requires, like bathing, dressing, moving safely, meals and infection control.

  3. Skills check. A supervisor watches you do the tasks before you work on your own.

  4. Your first client. We introduce you, and a supervisor checks in regularly.

Training keeps going: every caregiver takes training every year, including safety, infection control and preventing abuse and neglect.

For family caregivers

Family caregivers

Already caring for a loved one? You may be able to get paid for it.

If your loved one is on an eligible Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid) program, AVA may be able to hire you as their caregiver. You'd be an AVA employee, paid for the approved hours you work.

  1. 1. Call us. Tell us about your loved one and their Health First Colorado program. We'll tell you if this may be an option.
  2. 2. Your loved one's care is approved. Their case manager approves the care and the hours.
  3. 3. You apply and train. You complete the same hiring steps, checks and training as every AVA caregiver. We help you with each one.
  4. 4. You're paid for approved hours. You care for your loved one as an AVA caregiver, and AVA handles payroll and timesheets.

Eligibility rules apply. Hours depend on what the case manager approves.

Requirements

What you need to get started

You need

  • To be 18 or older
  • To be able to work legally in the U.S. (you'll fill out an I-9 form when hired)

  • References we can contact
  • To complete orientation, our online training and a skills check before you work on your own
  • A valid driver's license
  • A reliable car, to get to clients' homes and run errands for them (you never drive clients)
  • A smartphone, to check in and out of each visit (EVV, electronic visit verification)

Good to know

  • You never drive clients. AVA caregivers may not drive a client in any vehicle, theirs or yours.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine: offered to new employees within 10 days of starting (you can accept or decline).
  • Hours that fit your life: part-time or full-time, with weekday, evening and weekend shifts.

Questions

Questions people ask before applying

No. New caregivers without experience complete AVA's initial training before they start. It's interactive and online, on a website you can use from home. Then you do a skills check with a supervisor. If you've cared for a family member, that experience counts too.
